Good morning and happy Saturday to you! As many of you know, Emma Kate had an endoscopy on Thursday. An endoscopy is a procedure that enables the gastroenterologist to examine the esophagus, stomach, and first section of the small intestine. Her esophagus and stomach looked normal, but her upper intestines did not. The pictures showed lots of tiny sores (the doctor called them “erosions”-ugh!). It looks like something is literally eating away at her intestines. Dr. Alberty said that two things could cause this problem. The first is celiac disease and the second, is well, I have absolutely no idea. He totally lost me on the second thing, and I didn’t have the energy to ask questions. I guess I just figured we would cross that bridge when we got there. This could definitely be a cause for her not wanting to eat. She just can’t articulate, “Um I’m sorry Mom, but my duodenum hurts.” We shall wait and see, and in the meantime, I’m holding off on all oral feeds.
Celiac disease is diagnosed by taking a biopsy of the intestine and by blood test. The biopsy should be back on Monday and the blood work should be back in a week. If she does have celiac disease, we will treat it with a lifelong gluten-free diet (which is pretty easy right now considering she doesn’t eat much!). However, we would have to say bye-bye to cheerios and other cereals that she enjoys.
Overall, Emma Kate did great throughout the procedure. She was really fussy coming out of anesthesia, but that was to be expected. Once, we got home, she was back to her old self in no time!
And, while all of the gastrointestinal talk is great fun, IT’S GAME DAY, and Emma Kate has just one thing to say:

Interesting. Almost two years ago, Martilee started vomitting - all the time. Couldn't keep her feeds down. Couldn't keep anything down. She ended up dehydrated and in the hospital. They did several tests - the last being an endoscopy. Guess what? Little sores all over her duodenum. They biopsied and tested for h-pylori (I think) but it was negative. The doctor really didn't ever come to a conclusion about what was causing it. They put her on a round of steroids and she seemed to get better.
